Military Muckups

We could go back to the beginning of the country and see where the military has screwed up. But let's keep it simple and just look at how stupid they've been under the Bush administration, which has set a new standard for stupidity in leadership.

Utter bullshit disguised as propaganda: The family of former pro football player Pat Tillman say the Army disrespected his memory by lying about how he died, making up details in order to paint him falsely as a hero and hide the fact that he died because of friendly fire.

Speaking with the Washington Post, Tillman's parents said they believe the military and the government made up a heroic story about Pat's death in order to foster patriotism and a positive spin on the "War on Terror."

"Pat had high ideals about the country; that's why he did what he did," Mary Tillman told the Post. "The military let him down. The administration let him down. It was a sign of disrespect. The fact that he was the ultimate team player and he watched his own men kill him is absolutely heartbreaking and tragic. The fact that they lied about it afterward is disgusting."

Taking care of their own

An internal Air Force memo from 2002, from Ronald Garant of the comptroller's office to others, including the deputy undersecretary of defense, said that the $23.5 billion proposal to convert passenger planes into tankers and then lease them from Boeing was "a bailout for Boeing." It was the defense establishment taking care of its own. The Inspector Gneral's office concluded that Air FOrce officials and a people under RUmsfeld violated Pentagon and government rules on procurement. What it turns out they COULD have done was use the leverage to get Boeing to kick out cheaper and better tankers. Instead, they just took care of Boeing. Nice and cozy.

Gay soldiers

All sorts of soldiers have been openly gay in the ranks. Their comrades don't seem to have much problem with it, as long as they do their job. But
the military keep s kicking them out, even when they're in critical positions. The military has in fact lost more than 300 foreign language specialists,
including those who speak Farsi, Korean, and Arabic, because of "don't ask don't tell" policies. Almost 10,000 soldiers have been booted since
1993 for being gay, and it's cost the USA over $200 million to recruit and train their replacements.

PRISONER ABUSE

It's plain to everyone that the abuses that have taken place in the Iraqi prisons run by our soldiers were ordered by somebody other than the dunderheads who actually carried out those abuses.  Already the evidence in various photographs points to military intelligence officers.  When asked if these abuses violated the Geneva Convention, Rumsfeld said that these rules are "open to interpretation."  NO, you dolt, they're not.  These are clear violations.  I can't believe they let him SAY THAT IN PUBLIC.  Then on May 15, 2004, the New Yorker magazine reported that Rumsfeld had actually personally APPROVED the nasty interrogations.

SOLDIER ABUSE

The United States continues to cut benefits for veterans. A whole lotta boys and girls wounded in Iraq will find out just how little their gummint thinks
of them in the months and years to come. Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) was stripped of his chairmanship of the Veterans Affairs Committee after he expressed his concern that the White House was taking away healthcare benefits for veterans. Smith says it "all came down to the fact I wanted to spend too much on veterans......I am not a yes man. I am a loyal Republican who believes in fighting for good public policy and that is the best way to show loyalty."

Everybody knows that the Bush administration, despite Rumsfeld spouting that we'd never send troops anywhere unprepared, in fact SENT the military to Iraq, unprepared. Insufficient vehicle armor, insufficient body armor. They complained that the Democrats voted against the $87 billion blank check to keep the troops from having body armor. But why were they sent there without it IN THE FIRST PLACE?

So it's bizarre that the military made such a fuss when members of the 656th Transportation Company based in Springfield OH stripped parts from abandoned vehicles and other equipment to keep their own equipment running and armored. They in fact charged soldiers with theft, destruction of Army property and conspiracy to cover up their crimes. They were given dishonorable discharges and served time.

These soldiers took their jobs and missions very seriously, and did what they had to do. And they got punished for it. They did waht they did because the military gave them inadeuquate materiel in the first place. They should have given these soldiers medals, and instead they screwed them.
